La cinématique de l'Atlantique Nord : la question de la déformation intraplaque ArchiMer
Fidalgo González, Luis.
The main features of geodynamic evolution in the North Atlantic and the lithospheric plates surrounding it have been known for a quarter of a century now. However, a number of questions raised by the first models published have still not been clearly answered in detail. Among them, the difficulty in adjusting the domain to the north and the south of the Faeroe-Iceland-Greenland ridge should be highlighted. This study addresses the issue by using fracture zones as the main data for our reconstructions. We show that they accurately bound the kinematical reconstructions. They also enable kinematical reorganisation periods to be studied on the scale of oceans, as well as their duration. Reconstructions carried out on these bases confirm the existence of...

La pisciculture marine : un secteur industriel en émergence ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Harache, Yves.
In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterized by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost two million ECU. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Although research has started as soon as the seventies with a strong public incentive both for salmon, sea bass and sea bream, the development of these different types of aquaculture has not been done at the same pace. Some elements of sectorial dynamics are analysed such as research planning and financing, organization of the production and public policy. For...

Land reform and farm performance in Europe and Central Asia: a 20 year perspective AgEcon
Lerman, Zvi.
The rural sector in nearly all the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has undergone a shift from predominantly collective to more individualized agriculture. At the same time, most of the land in the region has shifted from state to private ownership. These two shifts – a shift in tenure and a shift in ownership – were part of the transition from a centrally planned economy to a more marketoriented economy that began around 1990 in the huge post-Soviet space stretching from Prague to Vladivostok. The transition reforms in the region were unprecedented in their scope and pace. Some 150 million hectares of agricultural land transferred ownership in these countries in just one decade of reform...

Large-scale patterns of river inputs in southwestern Europe: seasonal and interannual variations and potential eutrophication effects at the coastal zone ArchiMer
Romero, Estela; Garnier, Josette; Lassaletta, Luis; Billen, Gilles; Le Gendre, Romain; Riou, Philippe; Cugier, Philippe.
We provide data on nutrient export for 28 rivers in southwestern Europe and analyze long-term changes in the context of anthropogenic pressures and regulation policies. Special attention is given to seasonal variations, because the integrated annual values that are usually provided do not allow us to establish comparisons with seasonal phytoplankton dynamics. The eutrophication risk associated with river inputs is addressed by means of an indicator (Index of Coastal Eutrophication Potential, ICEP, Billen and Garnier, Mar Chem 106:148–160, 2007). An overview of the temporal evolution and the intra-annual variability of the ICEP is discussed for specific rivers and integrated coastal regions. The annual dynamics of the eutrophication indicator is analyzed to...

Lateglacial to Holocene climatic and environmental changes in Europe – multi-proxy studies on lake sediments along a transect from northern Italy to northeastern Poland ArchiMer
Lauterbach, Stefan.
Sediment records of three European lakes were investigated in order to reconstruct the regional climate development during the Lateglacial and Holocene, to investigate the response of local ecosystems to climatic fluctuations and human impact and to relate regional peculiarities of past climate development to climatic changes on a larger spatial scale. The Lake Hańcza (NE Poland) sediment record was studied with a focus on reconstructing the early Holocene climate development and identifying possible differences to Western Europe. Following the initial Holocene climatic improvement, a further climatic improvement occurred between 10 000 and 9000 cal. a BP. Apparently, relatively cold and dry climate conditions persisted in NE Poland during the first ca....

Le complexe «Dinophysis acuminata»: identification des espèces le long des côtes françaises ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele.
From seawater samples collected between 1984 and 1989 in 12 French coastal areas, a morphometric study have been realised on Dinophysis genera restricted to "acuminata" like species. Simple morphological criterias are given as suitable for discrimination of four dominant species occurring during toxic episodes in shellfish farms (Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning): Dinophysis c-closed-integral. sacculus, D. c-closed-integral. acuminata, Dinophysis sp. and D. c-closed-integral. norvegica. This last species cannot be included in the "acuminata complex" and produces temporary blooms along southern Brittany coasts. Pending a more precise diagnosis it is recommended to clarify the relationship between toxin composition and each species previously described.

Levels and trends of brominated flame retardants in the European environment ArchiMer
Law, Robin J.; Allchin, Colin R; De Boer, Jacob; Covaci, Adrian; Herzke, Dorte; Lepom, Peter; Morris, Steven; Tronczynski, Jacek; De Wit, Cynthia A.
In this paper, we review those data which have recently become available for brominated flame retardants (particularly the brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)) in samples from the European environment. Environmental compartments studied comprise the atmosphere, sediments and soils. sewage sludges. and a variety of biological samples and food chains. This is currently a very active research area, and we cite over 70 studies reported in the literature during 2003-04. Findings include that the input of BDEs (especially BDE209) to the Baltic Sea by atmospheric deposition now exceeds that of PCBs by a factor of almost 40 times. Sewage sludge samples from both industrial and background locations show concentrations of BDEs. HBCD...

Local and Sustainable Food Supply: The Role of European Retail Consumer Co-operatives AgEcon
Hingley, Martin; Mikkola, Minna; Canavari, Maurizio; Asioli, Daniele.
This paper investigates the rationale for local and sustainable food systems and retailer co-operatives as their entry points within local conditions. Emphasis is on localised food networks and connection between socially as well as environmentally sustainable production, distribution and consumption. Investigated is the premise that co-operative organisational structures, for reasons of their long-term socially responsible origins are at the forefront of development of local and sustainable food systems and are thereby in a position to offer a specific contribution to market development. Two key research questions are proposed: Firstly, is there a pre-determination of co-operatives to issues of sustainable and local food sourcing given the historical and...

Long-term and millennial-scale climate variability in northwestern France during the last 8850 years ArchiMer
Naughton, F; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Fernanda, M; Turon, J; Jouanneau, J.
Vegetation and quantitative climate reconstructions from a northwestern France shelf core (VK0358Bis) show orbital and suborbital climate variability for the last 8850 years in this region. A long-term cooling trend in summer temperatures, marked by gradual temperate and humid forest decline, parallels cooling in Greenland and the decrease of mid-latitude summer insolation reduction until at least 2000 cal. yr BP. At the long-term scale, the lowering in seasonal contrast revealed by vegetation changes follows the increase of precession. Corylus woodlands spread at the expense of deciduous Quercus forest, between 8740 and 8390 cal. yr BP, linked with the high seasonality conditions that, counterbalancing the long-term astronomical forcing trend, were...

Market Access and Regional Disparities: New Economic Geography in Europe AgEcon
Niebuhr, Annekatrin.
New Economic Geography (NEG) has reached a theoretical consolidation while related empirical tests are still scarce. The present paper aims at providing some evidence on the validity of forces emphasised by NEG. The analysis starts from the nominal wage equation derived from the Krugman "core-periphery model" and focuses on one of the main propositions of NEG that access advantages raise factor prices. The paper investigates the significance of market access for regional wages and the geographic extent of demand linkages for a cross section of European regions, also taking into account the effects of national borders. The regression analysis covers the period between 1985 and 2000. The results are consistent with the implication of NEG that demand linkages...

Moving on – European organic farming movements between political action and self-reflection Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun.
Organic farming movements in Europe are widely recognised as a positive force by market actors and civil society, as well as relevant actors in policy networks. At the same time, the organic movement is in a process of self-reflection, reconsidering its value basis. Taking account of both a policy network and a social movement perspective, this article seeks to understand political action of the organic sector. Making use of a cross-country comparison of European organic farming policy networks, it conceptualises the consequences of such action with regard to political influence and the identity of the organic farming movement. While different strategies are employed to influence politics, a space needs to be opened up within the movements for continuous...
